Sony officials today said the company will release a software upgrade that will let the PlayStation Portable video game system surf the Web without a cumbersome software trick.
The free software patch will be available next week in Japan, said Ken Kutaragi, chief executive of Sony's game unit.
The PSP comes with a built-in antenna for wireless internet access, but the only way to use it for surfing the Web has been to modify a limited browsing feature in the racing game "Wipeout Pure."
Sony also said it will launch a white version of the PSP, which is otherwise black. The white
version will be sold in Japan only.

Like Thin?
Monitors That Is
Well, according to Ecommerce Times, Samsung Electronics company executives told International Meeting on Information Display and Exhibition (IMID) 2005 Business Forum attendees that the global flat panel display market would double in size within the next two to three years. "The world is getting a little thinner" they said.
According to the latest research from the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices service, global sales of flat panel TVs will increase by 66 percent in 2005 alone, generating $25.6 billion in retail revenues. Samsung's Souk predicted that worldwide demand for LCD panels would outpace supply by mid-2006. "Samsung Electronics will consolidate its top position in the LCD sector by combining its enormous financial power and brand awareness," he said. But given the state of the industry, the increased interest of consumers in flat-screen products and the declining prices of these products, iSuppli senior analyst Riddhi Patel believes panel makers are going to ramp up their fabs according to plan. "If that happens, then this demand can be achieved," she said. Samsung, for one, reports it has begun production at its seventh-generation LCD plant and is also investing in eighth- and ninth-generation LCD production.
LCD versus plasma screens is an upcoming war for living room space -- and for dollars. These flat-panel TV formats are both thin, but that's where the similarities end.
"LCD and plasma are two different technologies addressing the same market," Patel said. "LCD is based on the liquid crystal technology whereas plasma is accomplished using a gas that is built into the television screen."
Which technology will ultimately win consumers' hearts? Analysts said it's too soon to tell, but in
the meantime one thing is certain: Flat-screen manufacturers seem to be positioned to generate plenty of revenue while consumers figure it out.

Apple Adding Music Videos to iTunes Store
Apple Computer has been talking with major recording companies in efforts to license music videos to sell through its iTunes Music Store, according to a report published in today's edition of The Wall Street Journal. The iPod maker may be seeking to replicate its success in digital music downloads with the offering. Apple said today that it has sold 500 million songs via iTunes since it opened its virtual doors two years ago.
If Apple is successful in negotiating licensing agreements with various recording companies, it may be likely that renewed talks of a version of its popular iPod music player that plays video is not too far off.
The Journal is reporting that Apple has already told some entertainment industry executives it could unveil a video-capable version of its music player as soon as September.
The videos would likely cost US$1.99 each via iTunes, according to the Journal. Consumers may be eligible for a discount if they buy a music video and a digital song at the same time.
Cool, Huh?

Google is investing in an ecommerce startup.
I guess no one can have too much money.
Already rich from their prescient investments in breakthrough companies like online search engine leader Google, renowned venture capitalists John Doerr and Ram Shriram think they have discovered their next gold mine.
It's another dot-com with a zany six-letter name -- Zazzle, a startup that makes customized T-shirts, posters and postage stamps.
Backed by their respective venture capital firms, Doerr and Shriram are investing US$16 million in Zazzle and joining the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company's board of directors -- a job both men also hold at Google. The investment, to be announced later today, will provide a marketing springboard for Zazzle, which has relied almost exclusively upon word of mouth since founder Robert Beaver II and his two sons, Bobby and Jeff, launched the Web site two years ago. The company has since grown to 100 employees.
While keeping a low profile, Zazzle has built a library of 500,000 digital images, including more than 3,500 items of copyrighted material licensed from Walt Disney's treasure trove of pop culture icons like Mickey Mouse and Goofy. Zazzle's technology has "really opened up the vault of all our character art for the first time," said Patrick Haley, Disney's manager of new business development for consumer products.

Another Scare!
Small Banks Targeted This Time
Once again something happens to make the public feel unsecure and leery. This time it doesn't have a direct connection to internet shopping, but I know it will effect it.
Smaller regional banks and credit unions have become prime targets for phishing - sophisticated scams that send fraudulent e-mails to consumers directing them to fake Internet sites where they are ordered to provide personal or account information.
Phishing scams hit an all-time high this spring, and even members of the White House employees credit union were probed.
But never frear, banks and financial institutions are fighting back against these hackers with new authentication technologies and better consumer-education programs.

Method for Classifying Web Site Content Being Changed
"With digital content now flowing freely across national boundaries, media platforms and delivery devices, this new system will allow ICRA [Internet Content Rating Association] and its partners and supporters to deliver better child protection, along with a significantly improved means of self-regulation to the industry on a global scale," ICRA Chief Executive Stephen Balkam said.
The full article is at http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/QNB6yBpqe8dR7Y/Method-for-Classifying-Web-Site-Content-Being-Changed.xhtml but here is a taste:
The Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA) is changing the way it ranks Web sites.
The new system will use Resource Description Framework (RDF) technology developed by the World Wide Web Consortium , which allows Web site developers to grade their sites according to the suitability of the content.
For example, the new system allows clearer differentiation between medical and pornography sites, and includes shortcuts to generate labels for pornography and gambling sites.
"RDF is a modern technology with an active and growing body of support from academia and the digital content production and distribution industries," said Stephen Balkam, chief executive at the ICRA.
"With digital content now flowing freely across national boundaries, media platforms and delivery devices, this new system will allow ICRA and its partners and supporters to deliver better child protection, along with a significantly improved means of self-regulation to the industry on a global scale," Balkam said.
RDF allows new areas of the Internet to be classified, such as RSS feeds and blogs, and the technology forms a significant part of the Semantic Web being developed by Tim Berners-Lee.
You should definitely read the rest. It is very interesting.

New .mobi Domain Approved but Challenges Remain
Among the problems that the carriers are grappling with is why so few mobile users access the Web from their phones. According to one of those touting the .mobi domain, the GSM Association, there are 1.8 billion mobile users in the world but only 12 to 14 percent have ever used the Web from their phones.
